Thornton arrest follows shooting on I-70 ramp that wounded Arvada driver
A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that wounded an Arvada resident in his 70s during a drive near Lakewood, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Oct. 8. Rafael Jose Mateo Ruiz was taken into custody without incident in Thornton on Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators said they used footage from a Lakewood traffic camera, automated license plate reader data and cellphone location information as they investigated the case. Ruiz was booked into the Jefferson County jail on two counts of attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference, first-degree assault with extreme indifference and attempted first-degree assault with extreme indifference. The charges are allegations; the case will proceed through the courts. The sheriff’s office said it learned of the shooting on Sept. 29 after Lutheran Hospital notified authorities that a man with a gunshot wound had arrived at its emergency department. Investigators determined the shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. The victim, identified as Tony Polisi, told investigators he and his wife were returning to Arvada after visiting a friend in Golden when they had an altercation with someone driving a red car. The shooting occurred as they traveled from Colfax Avenue toward the eastbound Interstate 70 ramp. Polisi said the other driver slowed down, and he passed the car. “As soon as we passed him, he opened fire on us,” Polisi said. Five bullets struck the couple’s vehicle; one passed through the car and driver’s seat and hit Polisi in the back. He was treated for a non-life-threatening injury, and a bullet bruised his lung, he said.
