Second CSU student arrested in Durward Hall on explosive-parts and endangerment charges

A second Colorado State University student was arrested at Durward Hall in Fort Collins and charged with felony possession of explosive or incendiary device parts and reckless endangerment, CSU confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 15.

The male student is the second person arrested on those charges in five days. Authorities have not publicly identified the student or described what items, if any, were allegedly found in connection with the second arrest.

The arrests follow an investigation into a separate case involving a 19-year-old CSU student. Police arrested that student Monday after receiving a tip about a possible flammable substance in a Durward Hall room. According to an arrest affidavit, officers searching the room found a glass jar containing a sticky white substance, aluminum powder, black iron oxide and an empty pipe.

Two students told police that the resident had shown them the jar and called its contents napalm, the affidavit says. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is working with CSU police to determine what the substance is; it has not been confirmed as napalm, the university said.

CSU said the investigation remains active and it could not provide further details. In the first case, the university said materials of concern were removed from the room and there was no continuing risk to campus. The Northern Colorado Bomb Squad was consulted and determined the building did not need to be evacuated.

The second arrest adds to concerns for students living in the residence hall, but authorities have not said whether the cases are connected beyond the charges and location. The university has not announced any campuswide safety measures related to the second arrest.
