Aurora and Denver pursue land transfer to resolve encampment dispute near shelter campus
Aurora and Denver are working to shift a disputed parcel along their shared border into Aurora’s jurisdiction, a move city officials say could clear the way to address a homeless encampment near Aurora’s Regional Navigation Campus. Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said the city discovered that a small piece of land beside its campus at East 40th Avenue and Chambers Road is technically within Denver, despite the cities’ boundary generally following 40th Avenue. Aurora bought the campus to provide shelter and support services to people experiencing homelessness. Coffman said some people at the encampment had previously received services at the campus but were asked to leave after not following program rules. He also cited concerns from nearby residents and businesses in both cities. The jurisdictional question matters because Aurora and Denver have different rules for removing encampments. Coffman said Aurora wants the authority to manage the area under its own procedures and is pursuing a boundary adjustment with Denver. A spokesperson for Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the cities are working toward a single set of rules for managing the property. Denver also said the encampment highlighted by Coffman appears to be largely within Aurora, underscoring the differing assessments of where the camp sits. Both cities expect to resolve the matter in the coming months. Coffman said Aurora completed a similar land-transfer process earlier this year with Centennial, involving property connected to Regis Jesuit High School’s planned expansion.
