Van Zandt County deputy’s 64-mile funeral procession ends in Canton

CANTON, Texas — Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Sherifi was escorted from Dallas to Canton on Monday in a 64-mile procession, with residents and first responders gathering along the route to honor him.

The motorcade left the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office at 10 a.m. and traveled from Interstate 35 to Woodall Rodgers Freeway, then south on Interstate 45. It continued on Highway 175 and Interstate 20 before reaching Eubank Funeral Home, off Highway 64 in Canton.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office had asked residents, fire departments and other first responders to stand along roads and overpasses. People waved flags and saluted as the procession passed.

Sherifi was shot and killed Tuesday night while attempting to serve a warrant. Investigators said the suspect, Mi Van Nguyen, was found dead inside his home. Authorities had not determined whether Nguyen was struck during the exchange of gunfire or died by suicide. Another officer wounded in the shooting was released from the hospital over the weekend, officials said.

Sherifi is survived by his wife and three young children, including a baby born last month. His funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Gravity Athletics, 29418 State Highway 64 in Canton.

The sheriff’s office said community members’ presence and support mattered to the department as it gathered to honor Sherifi.
