Mesquite police investigate fatal family shooting on Amber Springs Drive

Two 18-year-old men were killed and a 20-year-old man was wounded in a shooting early Wednesday in Mesquite, after a family argument over a child’s haircut escalated into gunfire, police said.

Officers were called at about 12:07 a.m. Oct. 14 to the 2200 block of Amber Springs Drive. They found the two teenagers with gunshot wounds in the roadway. Paramedics took them to Baylor Hospital, where both died, according to police. Their names have not been released.

The third victim, a 20-year-old man, went separately to a local emergency room. Police connected him to the shooting and said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Mesquite Police Lt. Michael Kelly said the dispute involved multiple family members, including siblings, in-laws, family friends and a godparent. The two young men who died were close but were not related by blood, police said.

“The initial altercation or argument was apparently over a haircut, and that somehow escalated into an altercation where guns were drawn,” Kelly said.

A nearby resident, Desiree Wilson, said she heard loud bangs as she was getting ready for bed. She described the neighborhood as usually quiet and said the shooting left her feeling sad and scared.

Police initially reported a different location, but later determined the shooting happened on Amber Springs Drive. Investigators have not released the victims’ identities or said who fired the weapon. No arrests have been made.

Kelly said the investigation is ongoing and police will determine who discharged a firearm and whether charges are warranted.
