Dallas Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Good Samaritan Who Intervened in Domestic Dispute

DALLAS — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a bystander who tried to intervene in a domestic dispute at a South Dallas apartment complex last week, according to Dallas police.

Isaiah Brazil was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the Oct. 30 killing of 28-year-old Samarius Johnson, police said. He remains in the Dallas County Jail.

Officers responded to a shooting call just after 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at The Anderson Apartments in the 3700 block of South Tyler Street. Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel found Johnson on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to an arrest affidavit, the chain of events began when a witness asked a woman, identified as Janya Wesley, for a ride to get food. Wesley went to her apartment, where Brazil — whom she had been dating for about a month — allegedly began assaulting her. A witness then told a group of people outside, including Johnson, about the fight.

Johnson went up the stairs to Wesley's apartment to confront Brazil. Wesley told Johnson not to get involved and shut the door, according to the affidavit. A short time later, the door opened. As Johnson walked up the stairs toward the door, Brazil stepped outside with a handgun and shot him multiple times, police said. Johnson jumped over the stair railing and crawled to the area where officers later found his body.

Investigators initially knew the suspect only by the nickname "Zay." Detectives used a phone number provided by Wesley to track down a TextNow account with the username "zaymoney," which was linked to an email address containing the suspect's full name. An anonymous caller later told detectives that the suspect had graduated from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in 2022 and provided names of his family members. A law enforcement database search of those names led investigators to Brazil.

The case has shaken residents of the apartment complex, where neighbors described Johnson as someone who tried to help others. Domestic violence advocates say the killing underscores the dangers faced by bystanders who intervene in abusive situations and the importance of calling trained professionals rather than stepping in directly.

Brazil is being held on a murder charge. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney. Police said the investigation remains ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact Dallas police.

Johnson's death marks at least the latest in a string of shootings in Dallas this year, fueling ongoing community conversations about gun violence and public safety. City officials have faced pressure to expand violence prevention programs and improve police response times in neighborhoods like South Dallas, where residents say they often feel neglected.

A vigil for Johnson is being organized by friends and family, according to social media posts. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
