Cedar Hill delivery driver wounded in shooting; 33-year-old arrested

A Cedar Hill Amazon delivery driver was shot twice while making a delivery on Oct. 12, and police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the shooting.

The driver, Yirmar Martinez, said she had pulled into a home’s driveway and turned on her high beams to locate the front door. As she moved toward an access road near the house, she saw Samuel Laird outside with a gun, according to her account. Martinez said Laird spoke to her in English before firing.

One bullet grazed the top of Martinez’s head and another struck her lower back. Police found her in a nearby parking lot. Her injuries were not life-threatening, officials said.

Both Martinez and Laird cooperated with investigators during the week after the shooting, police said. Laird remained in the Dallas County Jail as of Oct. 20. Investigators expected to present an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge against him that week; the information available did not establish whether the charge had been formally filed. Police have not disclosed a possible motive.

Amazon said it had contacted Martinez about available support and would cooperate with law enforcement. The shooting highlights the risks faced by delivery workers making stops at private homes, though authorities have not said what prompted the gunfire in this case.
