Teravainen’s late goal lifts Chicago past Pittsburgh as Bedard returns
CHICAGO — Teuvo Teravainen scored the decisive goal late in the third period Tuesday, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 in Connor Bedard’s first game of the season. Teravainen and rookie Roman Kantserov each scored twice. Spencer Knight stopped 24 shots as Chicago improved to 1-1 on a seven-game homestand. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby tied the game 3-3 with 10:43 remaining, sweeping in a rebound for his first goal of the season. Teravainen answered from a sharp angle with 4:18 left, and Tyler Bertuzzi added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. Chicago struck first just 28 seconds into the game. After Pittsburgh turned the puck over behind its net, Anton Frondell set up Teravainen in the low slot. Crosby tied it before Bedard helped create the Blackhawks’ next goal, moving the puck into the middle for Kantserov, who scored on a one-timer with 2:10 left in the first period. Kantserov added his second goal 10:32 into the second, tipping in a pass from Artyom Levshunov. The 22-year-old rookie scored his first NHL goal Saturday in a 5-2 loss to Carolina. Pittsburgh’s Nick Robertson cut the deficit to 3-2 late in the second, knocking in a loose puck for his fourth goal of the season. Bedard, Chicago’s captain, had been out since undergoing surgery on his left shoulder July 8. His assist came in his return to the lineup. Patrick Kane also recorded an assist, his 894th career NHL assist, tying Phil Housley for the most by a U.S.-born player. Crosby’s second goal of the night was the 656th of his career, tying Brendan Shanahan for 14th on the NHL’s all-time list. Robertson also scored for Pittsburgh, while goaltender Sergei Murashov made 15 saves. The Blackhawks played without forward Frank Nazar, who completed a two-game suspension for an illegal check against the New York Islanders. Chicago hosts Winnipeg on Thursday. Pittsburgh continues its four-game road trip Friday at Colorado.
