UChicago bars person of interest after reported sexual assault at fraternity house
University officials said Tuesday that a person of interest in a reported sexual assault near campus has been identified and barred from university grounds. Chicago police are leading the investigation; the university said the person is not affiliated with UChicago and would not be publicly named unless charges are filed.
A person of interest in a reported sexual assault at a fraternity house near the University of Chicago has been identified and barred from campus, university officials told students Tuesday.
The university said the individual is not a UChicago student and has no affiliation with the school. Officials did not release the person’s name, saying they would not do so unless charges are filed. Chicago police are leading the investigation.
The report concerns a 21-year-old woman who told authorities she was sexually assaulted over the weekend while attending a party at the house, which is associated with the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. The woman is not affiliated with the university.
University officials said someone intervened during the incident and the suspect fled. The woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. Campus police said surveillance footage showed someone matching the suspect’s description leaving the house.
Alpha Epsilon Pi’s national organization has said it is cooperating with the investigation and directed the chapter not to hold events or programs while the inquiry is pending. The organization said sexual harassment and sexual assault are prohibited under its membership standards.
The investigation comes amid calls from students for accountability following the report. No charges were reported as of Tuesday.
