Two Men Wounded in Rogers Park Gangway Ambush, Police Say

CHICAGO — Two men were shot and wounded Friday night when an assailant emerged from a gangway and opened fire on them as they stood on a sidewalk in Rogers Park, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened about 8:41 p.m. in the 1600 block of West Juneway Terrace, near North Ashland Avenue, according to a police account. The victims were on the sidewalk when the gunman, who has not been identified, came out of the gangway and began shooting.

An 18-year-old man was struck in the left shin and taken to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said. The second victim, a 31-year-old man, was also hospitalized in good condition. Police did not provide additional details about his injuries.

No one was in custody as of Saturday morning, and detectives from Area Three were handling the investigation. Police have not released a description of the suspect or a possible motive.

The location sits in a dense residential stretch of Rogers Park on the city's Far North Side, an area of apartment buildings and side gangways where a single shooting can reverberate through a block. Friday's attack adds to the tally of gun violence that residents and community groups have pressed city officials to address, and it underscores how quickly an ordinary evening on a neighborhood sidewalk can turn dangerous.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Area Three detectives or submit an anonymous tip through Chicago police's community reporting channels. Tips can also be phoned in to the department's anonymous tip line.

Both victims are expected to recover, police said.
