Frankfort murder case awaits subpoenas as defense examines claim of psychosis

Corie Walsh’s attorneys said they are gathering records and investigating her mental state as she faces first-degree murder charges in the death of her 2-year-old son. A Will County judge set her next pretrial court date for Nov. 23.

Frankfort murder case awaits subpoenas as defense examines claim of psychosis

FRANKFORT, Ill. — Corie Walsh appeared briefly in Will County court Monday as her defense team sought additional records in the case accusing her of killing her 2-year-old son, Barrett.

The hearing was a routine discovery status hearing, defense attorney Andrea Lyon said after the proceedings. Lawyers are awaiting more subpoenas and need to review evidence as they prepare Walsh’s defense, she said.

“We are getting prepared to defend her, and that requires us to know everything,” Lyon said. She described Walsh’s psychosis as “pretty overwhelming” and said her team is working to understand her condition. Another pretrial court date was set for Nov. 23.

Walsh, 40, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Her attorneys have argued she was experiencing a psychotic episode when Barrett died. “Psychosis is not a choice,” Lyon said Monday, calling the child’s death an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Prosecutors previously said Walsh was found in the family’s Frankfort home after Barrett was discovered in the basement. Court filings say two of the family’s other children returned from school and sought help from a neighbor, who pulled Barrett down and attempted CPR. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital; the Will County medical examiner ruled the cause of death asphyxia.

Prosecutors have also alleged that Walsh made statements about harming her husband and believed she had harmed her other children. Defense attorneys have said her statements to authorities and hospital staff were made while she was psychotic. Those allegations have not been tested at trial.

Lyon said Walsh’s family, including her husband, supports her. Attorney Robert Kerr said the defense is working with the jail to ensure she is treated fairly. Prosecutors did not comment after Monday’s hearing.
