Five relatives found dead at a home in Mundelein have been identified, and police say the preliminary investigation indicates Bryan Schmidt shot four family members before turning the gun on himself.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the dead as James Schmidt, 80; Rebecca Schmidt, 77; Maclaine Schmidt, 22; Nicole Heiser, 37; and Bryan Schmidt, 51. Police believe Bryan Schmidt was responsible for the shootings.

Officers found the five adults in the 200 block of Wellington Street around 11:45 p.m. Sunday after a family member requested a well-being check, Mundelein police said. Investigators believe the shootings took place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day.

Police said several suicide notes attributed to Bryan Schmidt were found at the scene. They reported no prior contact with him and said they are working to determine a motive.
