Deerfield apartment fire sends two residents to hospital, displaces neighbors

Two residents were taken to area hospitals after a fire broke out Saturday evening in a 16-unit apartment building in Deerfield, and most of the building’s occupants were temporarily displaced, fire officials said.

Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Department crews were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to the 1200 block of Deerfield Road. The fire began in a second-floor unit and was extinguished by firefighters, according to the department.

The two residents who were transported had stabilized conditions, officials said. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries and released.

Damage assessments were continuing Sunday. Most residents could not immediately return because utilities had been shut off, officials said. The cause of the fire had not been determined.
