More than 200 live cockroaches were found in several food-preparation and storage areas of the cafeteria at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center during a failed health inspection Friday, according to Chicago Department of Public Health records.

Inspectors found cockroaches near the grill, fryer, steamer and storage areas at the hospital, 836 W. Wellington Ave. They also documented a buildup described as “black slime” on an ice machine, where it dripped onto ice intended for people to consume.

The hospital said it had made alternative food-preparation and meal-service arrangements while working to address the inspection findings and meet requirements to resume kitchen operations. Patients continued to receive meals, the medical center said.

The health department had not responded to a request for comment as of Tuesday, Oct. 20, when the inspection findings were reported.
