Ballantyne residents prepare legal challenge to Morrison YMCA sale

CHARLOTTE — Opponents of the planned sale of the Morrison Family YMCA in Ballantyne say they will take their fight to court, with a lawsuit expected within two weeks, the coalition announced Oct. 22.

The group also plans to ask North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson to intervene over state laws governing charitable assets. The coalition’s legal challenge would seek to stop the YMCA of Greater Charlotte from completing its agreement to sell the facility to Moments of Hope Church.

Thousands of people have signed petitions opposing the sale, according to the report. The YMCA has defended the deal, saying proceeds would support its other branches. The transaction is expected to close next summer.

The planned sale has prompted protests and concern among residents about the future of a longstanding community facility. County leaders have also said they tried to buy the property but were denied, according to earlier reporting cited in coverage of the dispute.
