17-year-old charged after fatal crash near east Charlotte elementary school
Lachevis Finnie was arrested Monday and charged with felony hit-and-run in the death of 6-year-old Mariana Segoviano Espinoza. Police say she was struck while crossing Barrington Drive on Friday and the driver left the scene.
A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in a hit-and-run that killed a first-grade student in east Charlotte, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police identified the teen as Lachevis Finnie. He was charged Monday with felony hit-and-run in the death of 6-year-old Mariana Segoviano Espinoza. Court documents say Finnie did not have a valid driver’s license. He was held without bond because he was considered a flight risk, according to the documents.
Police arrested Finnie during a traffic stop in a 2013 Mercedes-Benz they were seeking in connection with the crash. Officers responded at about 3:21 p.m. Friday to the intersection of Barrington Drive and Lanecrest Drive, where a vehicle struck Espinoza as she walked across Barrington Drive and then drove away, police said.
Emergency medical personnel took Espinoza to a nearby medical facility with life-threatening injuries. She died Saturday. She attended Devonshire Elementary School, near her home.
Her parents said she had just gotten off her school bus when she was struck. They described her as a joyful child who loved dancing and making music videos. Her father, Manny, said she was “the happiest girl in this house.”
Police had described the vehicle they were seeking as a gray 2012-to-2015 Mercedes-Benz C250, last seen heading north on Barrington Drive. Neighbors and others left flowers and stuffed animals at the intersection, where a memorial grew after the crash.
CMPD is investigating. Anyone with information about the crash or vehicle is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers.
