An adult died in a fire Monday night at the Edward J. Bury Apartments, a public housing complex on Benoit Circle in Chicopee, officials said.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 7:35 p.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the building. They entered to search for people and found the adult, according to state and local fire officials.

The fire was contained to the unit where it began. Other residents were temporarily displaced and were receiving assistance from the Red Cross, officials said.

An autopsy is expected to determine the cause and manner of the person’s death. Massachusetts State Police investigators, along with Chicopee fire and police officials, are investigating the fire.
