Norwood Police Seek 65-Year-Old Local Man Charged in October Crosswalk Hit-and-Run
Norwood police have identified Maciel DeOliveira, 65, as the suspect in an Oct. 24 hit-and-run that injured two pedestrians at Washington and Day streets, and are asking the public to call with tips rather than approach him.
NORWOOD â Police have named a 65-year-old local man as the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that injured two pedestrians in a crosswalk last month, and they are asking residents to help locate him.
Maciel DeOliveira, of Norwood, faces charges of leaving the scene of personal injury and a crosswalk violation in connection with the Oct. 24 crash at the intersection of Washington and Day streets, Norwood police said Saturday. When officers went to take him into custody, he could not be found, and investigators say there is evidence he may have fled.
Police are urging anyone who knows where DeOliveira is to call 781-440-5181. They cautioned the public not to approach or try to apprehend him.
According to police, the crash was reported just after 6:30 p.m. One of the two victims pushed the other out of the path of the oncoming SUV and absorbed most of the impact, investigators said. That person suffered a concussion along with injuries to a shoulder and both knees; the second victim sustained wrist injuries.
The driver did not stop and continued south on Washington Street, police said at the time. Officers initially described the vehicle as a gray or black SUV, possibly an older Honda Pilot, likely with damage to one or both headlights.
DeOliveira was identified as the suspect after investigators reviewed surveillance footage, interviewed witnesses and examined license plate reader data, among other evidence, according to police.
The case highlights the dangers pedestrians face at local intersections and the difficulty of holding drivers accountable when they flee the scene. Police are relying on the community for help locating the suspect, and officials stressed that residents should report information to detectives rather than intervene themselves.
Anyone with information about DeOliveira's whereabouts is asked to contact Norwood police at 781-440-5181.
