Lowell man faces charges after August gunshot in Hudson apartment building
Heriberto Diaz, 24, was arrested after a weeks-long investigation into a gunshot that wounded his hand in a Hudson, New Hampshire, apartment building. Police allege he fired a handgun recklessly and tried to conceal evidence.
A 24-year-old Lowell man is facing charges in New Hampshire after police say he accidentally shot himself in an apartment building stairwell and then tried to hide evidence of the gunfire.
Heriberto Diaz was arrested Thursday at the Billerica House of Correction, where he was being held pending extradition to Hudson, New Hampshire, police said. He was later released after posting $200 cash bail set by a bail commissioner.
Police responded to Lions Avenue in Hudson at about 2 a.m. Aug. 10 after reports of a loud bang and an injured man outside the building. Officers found Diaz with a gunshot wound to his left hand. He was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for treatment.
Investigators said they found signs of a firearm discharge in a shared hallway, along with damage to a wall and floor consistent with a bullet being fired. After interviews, analysis of physical evidence and search warrants for two apartments, police allege Diaz discharged a handgun while handling it in a stairwell and attempted to conceal evidence afterward. Police said they recovered a firearm and other evidence.
An arrest warrant charges Diaz with one count of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and two counts of falsifying physical evidence. The allegations have not been adjudicated.
Diaz is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. Nov. 24 in Hillsborough County Superior Court’s Southern District in Nashua.
