Cohasset police investigate surveillance-linked swatting call targeting jewelry store
A false hostage report at a Cohasset jewelry store Sunday evening drew police from several South Shore communities and temporarily closed Route 3A, authorities said. Investigators believe the caller may have accessed the store’s video surveillance system. The call came in around 6:30 p.m. The caller, a man, claimed he had a pistol and a rifle and was demanding money for the release of two hostages, Cohasset police said. As officers arrived, he described their movements and gave details about areas inside the business that are accessible only to staff, making the threat appear credible. Police established a perimeter while contacting the store’s owner, who confirmed that she, her family and employees were safe. Officers later searched the building and found no hostages. No injuries were reported. The response included officers from Scituate, Norwell, Hingham and Hull. Cohasset police said the incident is being investigated as swatting, a hoax emergency call intended to trigger a major law enforcement response. Police Chief William Quigley praised dispatchers for keeping the caller on the line and gathering information that could help detectives identify the person responsible. He said such calls put officers and the public at risk, disrupt businesses and divert emergency resources. The investigation is ongoing.
