Envelope for Maryland elections office intercepted before delivery

A suspicious envelope addressed to the Maryland State Board of Elections was intercepted before delivery Thursday, State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis said.

DeMarinis called the incident “madness” and suggested the mailing could be an attempt to disrupt preparations for November’s elections. He did not provide details about the envelope or say who sent it.

“Threatening and harassment of election administrators must end,” DeMarinis wrote in a post on X. “The mission is clear — administer the election, let the people decide their future.”

Federal authorities are investigating reports of letters containing suspicious substances sent to congressional and election offices around the country. The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police are involved in that investigation, but it was not clear Thursday whether Maryland’s intercepted envelope is part of it.

The incident comes as election officials prepare to administer the November vote. No details were provided about whether the envelope contained a substance or whether anyone was exposed.
