Police shooting in Belair-Edison leaves man critically injured

A Baltimore police officer shot a man in the Belair-Edison neighborhood Thursday afternoon, leaving him in critical condition, police said. The shooting occurred around 12:15 p.m. near the 3900 block of Erdman Avenue.

Baltimore Police Chief of Patrol Col. Ryan Lee said the officer was in a marked vehicle conducting crime-suppression work when he began speaking with the man. The officer got out and approached him, and the man ran, Lee said. During the pursuit, the man pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the officer, according to Lee. The officer fired multiple rounds.

The man, whose identity police had not confirmed, is believed to be an adult. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The officer was not injured, Mayor Brandon Scott said.

Scott called the incident traumatic for the neighborhood and said it happened near a library and a child-care center. Police closed the 3800 and 3900 blocks of Erdman Avenue while the investigation continued.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office, which investigates police-involved shootings in the state, was notified and sent personnel to the scene, police said.
