Maryland says 572 teacher openings remain after four-year decline

Maryland reported 572 teacher vacancies this school year, down from more than 2,100 in 2022-23, the State Board of Education said Monday. The decline represents a reduction of more than 70% over four years, though hundreds of positions remain unfilled statewide.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools saw its reported vacancies fall from 283 to 16 over the same period, according to the state.

Gov. Wes Moore’s administration and the General Assembly have invested in public education, and state leaders credit grants and programs supporting educator training, higher pay and teacher-preparation programs with helping recruit and retain teachers.

“Our administration has tackled barriers to entry and strategically invested to create opportunities for passionate educators to pursue their dream of teaching,” Moore said in a statement. He added that the state would continue working to fill every vacancy.

The state also pointed to academic growth: Maryland ranked third nationally in reading growth and fifth in math growth from 2022 to 2025, according to the statement. The figures describe growth, rather than students’ overall achievement levels.
