AUSTIN — Texas defensive assistant Johnny Nansen was arrested Wednesday night after a three-vehicle crash in Austin and faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, head coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday. Austin police said officers responded to the wreck at about 9 p.m. Nansen, 52, was one of the drivers involved. During standard field sobriety testing, officers observed what police described as “multiple clues of impairment.” Police did not release details about the tests, say whether Nansen took a breath test or identify who was at fault in the collision. Nansen was not at Texas practice Thursday, Sarkisian said. The coach’s status for Saturday night’s home game against UTSA had not been determined. “We’re obviously disappointed, but that’s all I really have on it at this time,” Sarkisian said. Nansen coaches the Longhorns’ inside linebackers and serves as co-defensive coordinator. He has been on Texas’ staff since 2024. The arrest comes as the top-ranked Longhorns prepare for their next game after a 24-23 comeback victory over Ohio State propelled them from No. 4 to No. 1. The team has also faced scrutiny this week after quarterback Arch Manning apologized for publicly joking about an artificial-intelligence-generated video depicting Sarkisian striking ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe. Texas has not announced whether Nansen will return to the sideline, coach from another location or be replaced for the UTSA game. An arrest and charge are allegations; the case remains unresolved in court.
