Leander City Council has approved a letter of intent with CenTex Sports, moving forward plans for a roughly 40-acre sports and family-oriented development at 204 Heritage Grove Road. The proposal combines indoor and outdoor athletic facilities with retail, dining and wellness spaces. The city says the first phase would include an indoor sports complex of more than 150,000 square feet, a covered track, soccer fields and beach volleyball courts. Baseball and softball fields are proposed for a later phase. The agreement advances the project but does not mean the complex is already under construction. Under the city’s timeline, work on Phase 1 must begin by the end of 2027, with completion targeted for the end of 2028. Phase 2 facilities are expected to be finished by 2030. CenTex Sports founder Adrian Chapa says the project is intended to address the difficulty of finding enough local space for youth teams to practice and play. He said his organization has rented Round Rock’s multipurpose complex, where it has accommodated as many as 100 teams in a four-hour period, but finding fields closer to home remains a challenge. The developers describe the project as more than a sports venue. CenTex Sports chief development and operations officer Veronica Romero said plans include public education and community programs, alongside opportunities for families to spend time at the site. Mayor Na’Cole Thompson said the project fits Leander’s growth and its large population of families with young children. She also said tournaments and visitors could support nearby businesses, with retail space planned as part of the development. The project’s total cost could exceed $145 million once fully built, according to developer estimates. CenTex Sports says the development will be privately funded, while the city’s role is expected to include development agreements and infrastructure improvements. The available plans do not specify the value or terms of that city support.
