Mailing-list error sends duplicate absentee ballots to 1,154 Athens-Clarke voters
A mailing-list mix-up led Athens-Clarke County to send duplicate absentee ballots to 1,154 voters ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. Election officials say voter-specific safeguards will prevent more than one ballot from being counted per person.
ATHENS, Ga. — A mailing-list error resulted in 1,154 Athens-Clarke County voters receiving two absentee ballots for the Nov. 3 general election, county election officials said Oct. 9.
The county sent the ballots Monday. Officials later learned that the list provided to the printer included addresses from an earlier mailing, producing duplicate ballots for some voters who had requested one.
Athens-Clarke County Elections Department Director Pam Long said the department is tracking the affected ballots and has procedures to ensure that only one ballot is accepted from each eligible voter. Absentee and in-person ballots are associated with individual voters, officials said, preventing a voter from casting more than one counted vote.
Voters who receive two ballots should complete and return only one. The extra ballot may be shredded or taken to the county elections office; officials advised against mailing it back or throwing it away intact.
The duplicate mailing adds a practical burden for affected voters, but election officials said staff will review returned absentee ballots to ensure that no more than one vote is submitted per person.
