Hall County DA Lee Darragh resigns days after unopposed reelection, citing 'difficult decision'

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh resigned effective Friday, Nov. 5, just days after being reelected without opposition, according to a letter from Darragh and a statement from the District Attorney's Office.

Darragh, who was first appointed to lead the Northeastern Judicial Circuit in 2005 and won a full term in 2007, said the decision came after careful consideration and discussions with his wife and family.

"During my career, I have had the pleasure of working with attorneys, investigators, advocates and administrative professionals in our shared fight for justice," Darragh wrote. "More than employees, these people are like my family. More than a job, this has been a calling to help others and serve them as I have served God and my family."

The resignation leaves the circuit, which covers Hall and Dawson counties, in the hands of Acting District Attorney Jennifer Bagwell. In a statement, Bagwell said she was proud to have worked with Darragh for 30 years and sought to reassure residents.

"I want to assure the citizens of Hall and Dawson Counties that our office continues to seek justice with fairness and integrity," Bagwell said.

Bagwell, who has worked in the Northeastern Judicial Circuit since 1996, plans to run for the office to fill the remainder of Darragh's term.

The timing of the resignation — coming so soon after an uncontested election — is unusual, but Darragh's letter offered no specific reason beyond family considerations. The transition comes as the circuit continues to handle a heavy caseload, and Bagwell's decision to seek the seat suggests continuity in leadership.

Darragh's departure marks the end of an era for the office he has led for nearly two decades. His resignation was first reported by local media.
